Life on Two Legs, by Norman Sheffield

Norman Sheffield, founder of Trident Studios, London and founding Manager of Queen, breaks his silence for the first time in forty years in an autobiography about what really went on behind closed doors.

Recording some of the biggest selling songs of all time such as "Hey Jude"-The Beatles, "Space Oddity"-David Bowie, "Candle in the Wind"-Elton John and many others, Trident was at the epicentre of the music industry's biggest names but it was one band in particular that caught the eye of the ex-drummer – a four piece unknown band called Smile. That band, under Sheffield's management, went on to become one of the biggest selling artists in the world – that band was Queen. It was a tumultuous relationship filled with twists, turns, trials and tribulations, scandal and rumour and one that ultimately led to an acrimonious split. Queen's volatile leader Freddie Mercury famously dedicating the opening track on their Night of the Opera album to Norman: Death on Two Legs.

With original unseen photography and copies of the original 1972 Queen Contracts– this book shines a light on a time that could never exist in today's society, a place in rock and roll history that - in Freddie Mercury's own words - was guaranteed to blow your mind.

Funny, fascinating and occasionally irreverent – and with a foreword by Sir Paul McCartney –this is an unmissable memoir that brings to vivid life some of rocks greatest characters.

The book also provides access to a exclusive music playlist for your PC or mobile device so you can listen to the music behind the story.

Life on Two Legs
By Kel
I really enjoyed this book. I have been a 60's and 70's music nut forever so it was a joy to soak up Norman's insights and reflections. What a great little business he got rolling too - a good example of being one step ahead of the game, and working hard. Owning a few albums that were recorded at Trident added to the pleasure of the read. The chapters on when and how things came unstuck are interesting (Queen, overseas investments), and I felt I wanted to know more. The two other music bios I have read, Keith Richards and Bacharach, featured the unusual approach of including comment by certain key players in response to the author's take on things. I sort of wanted to hear, say Brian May's view, or those of the independant investors in Trident, just for balance. But I do warmly recommend this book to music crazies like me!

VERY unique story...
By Brian Kehew
A very unique view of the Trident studio and their ways. Lots of great information never found in other books, and helps to balance the one-sided angry stories Queen have told all their lives (not unfounded, but Norman points out the extreme COSTS to do things for the band... they may not have known.) Great stuff on Bowie, Roy Thomas Baker, Ken Scott, many more big names from the studio's history. Great for fans of 60s 70s music!

A must read for the pop music enthusiast - plus a great personal story of Norman's journey
By mandy ives
This was a fantastic insight into the music industry during such an important time. A great walk down memory lane. Norman's story is so unique and well written and certainly gives the consumer a whole new perspective on how things really worked during those years. Being a huge Queen fan, it was very interesting to see how the band evolved and the "behind the scenes" work and money that went into their success. Definitely a great Christmas gift for the music enthusiast !
