Operating Systems: Internals and Design Principles is intended for use in a one- or two-semester undergraduate course in operating systems for computer science, computer engineering, and electrical engineering majors. It also serves as a useful reference for programmers, systems engineers, network designers and others involved in the design of computer products, information system and computer system personnel.
Operating Systems provides a comprehensive and unified introduction to operating systems topics. Stallings emphasizes both design issues and fundamental principles in contemporary systems and gives readers a solid understanding of the key structures and mechanisms of operating systems. He discusses design trade-offs and the practical decisions affecting design, performance and security. The book illustrates and reinforces design concepts and ties them to real-world design choices through the use of case studies in Linux, UNIX, Android, and Windows 8.

He has received the award for the best Computer Science textbook of the year ¿seven times from the Text and Academic Authors Association.
Bill has designed and implemented both TCP/IP-based and OSI-based protocol suites on a variety of computers and operating systems, ranging from microcomputers to mainframes. As a consultant, he has advised government agencies, computer and software vendors, and major users on the design, selection, and use of networking software and products.
As evidence of his commitment to providing a broad range of support to students, Bill created and maintains the Computer Science Student Resource Site at WilliamStallings.com/StudentSupport.html. This site provides documents and links on a variety of subjects of general interest to computer science students (and professionals).
He is a member of the editorial board of Cryptologia, a scholarly journal devoted to all aspects of cryptology. He is a frequent lecturer and author of numerous technical papers. His books include Data and Computer Communications, Ninth Edition (Prentice Hall, 2011), which has become the standard in the field.
Dr. Stallings holds a PhD from M.I.T. in Computer Science and a B.S. from Notre Dame in electrical engineering.

I consider this to currently be the overall best college-level CS undergraduate OS textbook and supporting infrastructure.
By Doug J.
My "personal" opinion is based on 40 years of designing and implementing numerous operating systems for research (at CMU and other universities) and as commercial products (at DEC and other companies)--and on examining competitive books. I consider this to currently be the overall best college-level CS undergraduate OS textbook and supporting infrastructure.
What it is NOT (thank goodness): the best book for OS novices; a book for IT students and practitioners and other non-CS college students; a book about Microsoft Windows, Android, Linux/UNIX; a book about real-time and embedded OS's--I do miss a little bit more content about some of those topics. But most people with those interests can expect to find some of the book's content valuable for them. There are a great many books at the textbook and research levels that cover OS's and OS topics either less comprehensively or more narrowly and deeply than this one. There is a smaller number of books focused on application-specific (e.g., industrial automation, military, smartphones, etc.) OS's.
This is not a hypothetical "ideal" OS textbook for everyone, which would necessarily be longer and more detailed on some topics, and would almost certainly require a very challenging 2-semester course.

Highly recommended
By Nenad Knezevic
Great book. Fairly understandable even for a non-computer science major. I definitely feel that I would have gotten more out of the book if I had more experience working with system calls and C programming but this is not the book's fault. Some sections are more difficult to understand than others so I had to look up some material but again this is most likely due to my lack of experience with this type of programming rather than a problem with the book.

Understanding that Hidden Operating System
By Bob Monroe
Reading books for academic study means I go through a significant amount of literature each year. Each writer has their own style and each publisher has their own preferred method of book building. Pearson Education out shined themselves with Operating Systems Internals and Design Principles. The first thing you'll notice is the fine paper the book is printed on. Usually this quality of paper is very expensive textbooks or religious publications. The paper is light and delicate to touch yet durable and difficult to tear. Just touching each page felt like I was reading a museum quality manuscript.
Next, the book is covered in a wealth of resources. When you open the front cover the first page is an access code for additional chapters, videos, animations and other premium content. Each chapter has dozens of outstanding reference books that provide the foundation for the author's thought process. All good books are based on solid research and this book is a perfect example of deep research already provided to the reader.
The bibliography is worth the price of the book because it covers the evolution of not just operating systems but computing and design theories. William Stallings is not new to writing and his experience in creating highly useful textbooks comes through in every page. This book starts off like a history book, going into the genesis of certain operating systems. Windows, Unix, Linux and Android are covered in general detail to begin the lessons. These operating systems were chosen because each one is so different from the others that they are perfect examples of how operating systems can be implemented.
The first chapter gives the reader and overview of what an OS is and how difficult building this software really is. Challenges and how they have been overcome are initially introduced yet built upon as the book goes deeper. This book goes pretty deep too. Complex issues such as memory management, interrupts, faults, scheduling (process, CPU, tasks and hardware) and algorithms are dissected between theory and practicable applications. These topics aren't just discussed but broken down to mathematical formulas to show best and worse case solutions.
This is not a book to flip around reading or casual study. The content is original and compelling methodologies going back to original computing ideas like Multics and punch card programming. As is often said, computing work stands on the shoulder of giants. Dr. Stallings from MIT pays homage to those brilliant minds that had to solve some of the most original problem ever seen. Nobody is painted as a hero, just as work working critical minds.
The only downside I had with this book is the abundant use of acronyms. It took me a while to adjust my thinking to accommodate all the new initials. I understand MBR to mean Master Boot Record but in this book it means something entirely different. Luckily, the author takes pity on the reader and provides an index for all the acronyms in the back of the book. OMG.
Security isn't mentioned as much as I would have liked but that is my own prejudice, not the authors shortage of material. The reading is not difficult nor is the math. The concepts are easy to digest and the diagrams help explain points in a clear fashion. The book gave me a much better appreciation for that thing between the keyboard and the CPU we call the operating system.
