absorbing rainforest setting and cracker dynamics

Grace Thacker is such a breath of fresh air. Innocent, trusting and loyal, she is a clear hearted heroine. Despite her soft nature and dislike of confrontations, Grace is determined not to lose courage before Rafael's ferocious anti-social presence and boy is that hard. He really is a darkly driven, cynical person but all will be satisfyingly revealed. It’s a wonder I could draw breath again after Rafael reveals his painful beginnings (no spoilers – you’ll have to read it yourself)
There is a huge shock for Grace when she discovers why Rafael will no longer bankroll her puzzling successful business with no profit (it’s a great twister – you gotta read it!) some even bigger shocks that nearly flatten her. Sarah Morgan very cleverly and sensitively brings in a painful disability that explains a lot of the problems destroying Grace’s dynamic business and also gives Rafael and Grace a new slant on their relationship.
An unusual Brazilian rainforest setting with some nice ecosystem, local community, fair trading touches. I notice another reviewer critique this as a Star Bucks rip off which I think is what makes this story relatable because we can all relate to fair trading. Especially for the small communities living in near poverty, getting ripped off on their back breaking, labour whilst companies make obscene profits. No wonder Rafael is so unforgiving. A great, unmarred story.

Ho hum

The hero isn't very nice to the herione, thinks she is a thief, they are thrown together for a couple of days and fall in love. Um, no - They fell in lust. I want a love story, not just a lust story. I was not sold on the happily ever after. Why do authors keep trying to write a love story that takes place over two days? It is really, really hard to make that work and most people fail.

This one's a keeper

This was a keeper. What a fun story. Most of the book take's place in Brazil and I liked the jungle setting. I read tons of Harlequin Presents and this one was a favorite.I really liked the lead characters. I will be looking for more of Sarah Morgan's books.

This is a MUST BUY if you want to learn Number Theory!

This book is an AMAZING introduction to the Theory of Numbers. It assumes no previous exposure to the subject, or any technical mathematical knowledge for that matter. Its prose is lucid and the style appealing. Davenport chose NOT to write a lemma-theorem-proof kind of book, and the result is a marvelous, eminently readable introduction to the subject. Its wonderful to read a book where good prose is used to appropiately substitute a massive collection of uninviting symbols. I've also been reading other books on Number Theory, such as Hardy & Wright, but none are as clear as this one.
I found the chapter on quadratic residues (which includes the reciprocity law) to be especially well written. The section on computers and number theory is excelent as well. A concise and coherent discussion of crytography and the RSA system is included here. The organization of the book's chapters is fantastic. Each chapter builds up on results proven in the previous ones, showing well the connections between the different aspects of Number Theory. The exercises of the book range from simple to challenging, but are all accesible to someone willing to put effort into them.
This would be an excelent source for learning number theory for mathematical competition purposes, such as the ASHME, AIME, USAMO, and even for the International Mathematical Olympiad. The book contains much more than what is needed for these competitions, but the olympiad/contest reader will benefit greatly from a study of Davenport's work.
The book can certainly be used for an undergraduate course in Number Theory, though it might need supplementary materials, to cover a semester's worth of work. I know the book has been used in the past in previous editions as the main text for Math 124: Number Theory at Harvard University.
I would also recommend this book to anyone interested in acquanting themselves with Number Theory.

A classic that is still valuable

The principal virtue of this text is that it can be taken up by readers with no more than ordinary high school level mathematical maturity yet it can aptly serve as the text for an undergraduate level first course in Number Theory. It is a model of clear and concise mathematical enunciation.

Good book, but if you have the money, there are better

Well, this is definitely a very good introduction to number theory. The author provides clear, readable proofs of all the most basic theorems on topics such as congruences, sums of squares, etc. He explains things quite well. However, despite costing almost 2.5 times as much, I would recommend Hardy and Wright's book An Introduction to the Theory of Numbers more highly than Davenport's book. Seriously, although it may seem good that Davenport doesn't require a knowledge of calculus as a prerequisite for his book (which Hardy DOES require), one probably shouldn't learn number theory until one has a good backrground on topics ranging from improper integrals to infinite series. Because Davenport does not require calculus as a prerequisite, he neglects HUGE aspects of what could actually be considered BASIC number theory: namely, the basic analytic aspects (such as Tchebycheff's results on the Prime Number Theorem) and the additive theory (i.e. partitions and such, as well as the basics of the generalized theory surrounding Waring's problem for high powers of integers). So, my recommendation is, wait until you know integral calculus and the theory of infinite series BEFORE buying a book on number theory, and then buy Hardy and Wright's book rather than this one.

About the Author
Poppy Evans is an award-winning writer and graphic designer who teaches and lectures on art and design. Most recently, she served as Assistant Professor at the Art Academy of Cincinnati where she taught for 16 years. Now retired, she continues to teach art and design at local colleges and universities. Her background includes serving as managing editor for HOW magazine and as board member for HOW magazine's Editorial Advisory Board. She is also a former board member for Cincinnati AIGA. In addition to co-authoring the Exploring the Elements of Design, she is the author of Exploring Publication Design, 12 other book titles for graphic designers, and hundreds of magazine articles. Prior to teaching and writing for the design industry, she worked for many years as a graphic designer and magazine art director.

Mark Thomas is Professor and Chair of the Communication Arts Department at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, where he has been teaching for 25 years. Mark has developed courses in design research methods, illustration, and design systems as well as a thesis program for communication arts. He is a graphic designer, illustrator, and published author who has designed numerous exhibitions, catalogues, and posters for graphic designers, fine artists, and illustrators. An award winning designer for educational board game design, he holds a U.S. Patent for an educational color demonstration device and method for teaching color theory. He also serves as President of the Board for AIGA Cincinnati.

Fun Textbook

This is my textbook for class. But were I not in a class, I would like to have this book on my shelf. It is clear, precise, with modern/contemporary examples of design. It is also well-designed as a book. It goes into depth where it should, but doesn't go on and on, and the examples support the text and it is clear why they are there. Also, so many of these design books communicate ideas with captions. In this one, I don't have any trouble reading all the captions.

This was required for my design class. This book is definitely helpful, descriptive about its topics, and provide great examples. It was quite easy to understand, and has helped me understand my class a lot more especially when it came to the terms it used.

I got this for a class titled "Oral Interpretation of Children's Literature," and the class was pretty much designed around this text. I learned a lot. This is an excellent text for anyone wanting to learn to be better "storytellers" for children. It's an art form.

Good but has a ton of issues

I have had this book for about three months now, its been a good book but recently as I have gotten further into it I am finding more and more mistakes in it. I have had problems where i use a table in the book and it says to interpolate and you can't even get the values they get in the example. Overall they need to check the math in the book and update the references they use many of them have been updated and not recently either.

This book came but wasn't complete. It was missing all of the pages with the tables/formulas. Strangely enough, it had the exact same title, ISBN, and version/year as the books others had in class, but it was about 1/2 as thick. I guess it was printed wrong. Sent it back for a refund.

Paradoxically, technology in fashion has both advanced artistic creation and obscured the sense of the designer’s expert hand. Similarly, handmade garments have come to represent either a nostalgia for lost craftsmanship or, in haute couture, a cult of personality and affluence. Interviews with renowned and cutting-edge designers such as Sarah Burton, Karl Lagerfeld, and Miuccia Prada discuss how technology can blur the line between haute couture and prêt-à-porter, and ultimately question the relevance of the distinction between hand and machine.
A tour de force in art book production, Manus x Machina incorporates two volumes into its innovative package. The main volume of the book includes a smaller hand-sewn booklet, which features the printed interviews, tucked into the back jacket flap. The outer cover of the main volume is made of three-ply plastic layers with high-frequency weld and die-cut flaps. The paperback cover is die cut (modelled on the punch cards used in the first automated weaving looms), and the main volume includes 5 different paper stocks and silver foil stamping, and is printed with both high-density and ultraviolet inks. The book also features new photography of extraordinary pieces, including intricate 19th-century floral designs by William Morris, handcrafted haute couture of designers such as Christian Dior and Alexander McQueen, and the specatuclar 3D creations of Iris van Herpen.

Most Enjoyable Read - Get Your 'Hands' on This!

Saw the exhibit 'first hand', and it was fabulous. This catalog couldn't contain all the fabulous pieces, as they were too numerous. However, there are many garments shown in their entirety along with close-up photographs highlighting the stitching and complex construction.
There is also information on fashion, construction and other techniques used throughout history and information on businesses used to supply the flowers, feathers and specialty items used so many years ago (some of which are still in business today). At the end of the book is a glossary of terms relating to the industry.
For anyone even peripherally interested in clothing/fashion, this is a wonderful read. The only disappointment was the photo of Karl Lagerfeld's wedding dress, which was the inspiration for the Manus x Machina Exhibit. In person it was spectacular - the embroidery on the train was exquisite - I do not believe the photo in the book did it justice, and I would have liked a close-up of the embroidery. But, then again, perhaps it is impossible to capture Karl Lagerfeld's genius in a photo!

Beware defective books

Beautiful book and exhibit; per other reviews.

Beware of defective copies. My first copy has pages printed out of order (page 125 printed both at 125 and instead of 163).

Ordered a replacement copy from Amazon and it's the same. I guess the entire run of books is defective.

Fascinating, fun & full of information!

This is one of my all-time favorite research books on ancient Egypt. For anyone interested in the use of plants, perfumes, cosmetics, and/or medicines in ancient Egypt, this book is a must! Dr. Manniche talks about every plant used in ancient Egypt that has been identified, and also talks about the gardens so beloved by the ancient Egyptian people. I developed a talk on Egyptian cosmetics for use as a museum docent, and much of it is heavily based on Dr. Manniche's book.
