About the Author

John E. McMurry received his B.A. from Harvard University and his Ph.D. at Columbia University. Dr. McMurry is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and an Alfred P. Sloan Research Foundation Fellow. He has received several awards, which include the National Institutes of Health Career Development Award, the Alexander von Humboldt Senior Scientist Award, and the Max Planck Research Award. In addition to The Organic Chemistry of Biological Pathways, he is also the author of Organic Chemistry, Fundamentals of Organic Chemistry, and Chemistry (with Robert Fay).

Tadhg P. Begley received his B.Sc. from National University of Ireland and his Ph.D. at the California Institute of Technology. Dr. Begley is the recipient of many awards, including the Merck Faculty Development Award and the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award. His research group uses the principles and techniques of organic chemistry to study complex organic transformations found in vitamin biosynthetic pathways. In addition to The Organic Chemistry of Biological Pathways, Dr. Begley has edited Cofactor Biosynthesis: A Mechanistic Perspective.

Useful, but somewhat disappointing

When I opened the book for the first time, my immediate reaction was "Wow, there's not much text, is there?" The page is fairly small to begin with, the font is fairly large, the line spacing and margins are generous, and there are a lot of figures. I realized after a while that this wasn't an especially fair criticism, though. Because the purpose of the text is primarily to show mechanisms of important metabolic reactions, most of the information can be conveyed through chemical structures. In fact, a significant chunk of the text is devoted to saying (paraphrased), "well, it's extremely difficult to determine exact mechanisms, so the precise path that this reaction follows is uncertain. The figure shows the most commonly proposed mechanism, but another possibility is that..." The alternative is most often explained in words but sometimes gets its own figure.

The book is very descriptive, offering mostly "what" and "how" rather than "why." Arguably, there's nothing inherently wrong with that, especially because the preface essentially says directly that that's the purpose of the book. But it does mean that the book is quite limited, and isn't very useful on its own. You would need a fully fleshed-out course to extract much value from it, and unfortunately, I know from firsthand experience that a well-designed course is far from a given. Our lectures and exams basically just asked us to regurgitate the mechanisms from the text, which was not useful or enjoyable. That seems to be the danger: a lazy lecturer told to use this textbook to teach a course will produce a worthless class from which the students will take away almost nothing of lasting value.

All that aside, there are still some quibbles with the book. Some of the figures are repetitious, which can be quite confusing. And it doesn't cover some extremely important mechanisms, such as THF-mediated methylation.

It's frustrating, honestly - even if you have no problem with the book's purpose as a compilation of reaction mechanisms, you would then expect it to be an excellent reference... and it just isn't. There are too many gaps in what it covers, and too many things that are annoyingly difficult to find among the thicket of chemical structures. It certainly still has its uses, considering that there's really no other textbook with such an authoritative compilation of mechanistic detail on the topics it does cover. But there seems to be room for it to be so much better, and its uses are limited at any rate.

Great book

This is a very easy to read book. If you have already taken organic chemistry it may be a bit of a review but it does apply the information to biological pathways. If you have not already taken organic chemistry, it is a great book to learn it. I think that it is easier, yet just as comprehensive as other textbooks out there, but it skips over things that are more useful in physical organic chemistry (energy equations and things like that). We are using it in our biochemistry class and it's a great review that gets to the point.

Learn more about biosynthesis of primary and secondary metabolites

This book is simply great. The scholar and very clear presentation by the authors make the subject of each chapter almost self-explanatory. The first two chapters introduce the organic reactions which are relevant in biosynthesis, stereochemistry of biological molecules and the major classes of primary metabolites. In the following chapters the authors discuss, with care and in detail, the biosynthesis of every class of primary metabolite, showing mechanisms for every single reaction. The last chapter on biosynthesis presents examples of some natural products biosynthesis (classical examples). Unfortunately, no example on the biosynthesis of phenylpropanoid derivatives is included. However, even though, the book is worth of purchase for students and teachers interested in the mechanistic aspects of primary and secondary metabolites biosynthesis.

Rochman, an expatriate South African, selected these 10 stories by eight of her compatriots. As she points out in the introduction, the stories are grim; readers unprepared to confront the harsh realities of apartheid may well be shocked. The book opens with the brutal "Crackling Day" by Peter Abrahams, told by a black boy who gets a beating for having defended himself against a violent group of white schoolboys. Following that is "The Old Chief Mshlanga" by Doris Lessing, which is more subdued, but just as upsetting. Nadine Gordimer is represented by "Country Lovers" and "A Chip of Glass Ruby." Other stories describe a young black boy's father being taken away by police, the unlikely camaraderie between a white soldier and a black guerrilla, the silence of a rainy night in a black township after a firebombing. These thought-provoking tales present a stunning indictment of apartheid, although some contain powerful sexual references that may not be suitable to younger members of the target age group. Grade 9 Up This short collection is consistently fine in its effort to humanize a major issue of our time. Eight authors are represented by ten stories; the writers are black and white and range from the much-anthologized Doris Lessing, Nadine Gordimer, and Mark Mathabane to less-familiar names like Dan Jacobson and Ernest Havemann. Somehow Tenderness Survives is a worthy companion for other collections such as A Land Apart (Penguin, 1987), edited by Andre Brink, African Short Stories (Heinemann, 1985), edited by Chinua Achebe, and The Penguin Book of Southern African Stories (1986), edited by Stephen Gray. Although for the most part the stories in this latest collection are simple, even understated, in style, they are subtle. Reading this anthology may help high-school students to grasp the complex idea of how the most private corners of life are affected by systematic restriction and injustice. Life of Apartheid

This collection of short stories tells about the pain of living under the system of apartheid, from all points of view. Some of these stories are about black people who have to live as inferiors for their entire lives, while others are about white people who realize what kind of system this really is. No matter what side the speaker of the story is on, all of the stories tell of realization and pain and they exhibit over and over again what a bad way to live apartheid was.

I liked that each story was slightly different--some were about the rich, others about the poor, and every author had a different theme and a different purpose. I didn't feel like I was reading the same thing over and over. I tend to not like short stories, though, because they don't have the time to develop the characters to the extent I'd like. I'm always left wondering what happened to the characters after each story ends.

An eye-opening book.

I was forced to read this book when I was in 6th grade; a few of the stories were selected by our reading teacher, and we were to read and comment on them. Given that it was a school assignment, I was not looking forward to it. However, I ended up devouring the entire book that same night. Growing up in a suburban middle-class white neighborhood meant I had never encountered the issues of apartheid and racism that the characters in this novel endured. Needless to say, I cried while reading the majority of those stories. It really opened my eyes to a world very different from my own, where it wasn't safe to be black in a country that was predominantly black. For the last four years, I taught special education in a junior high and a high school, and I used at least one of these stories each year to give my students a different perspective, and to help teach empathy. I highly recommend this book.

Through working with my students, I've developed what I believe to be an extremely effective method of learning how to play Street Fighter. This method is based on the idea of learning one tiny aspect of the game at a time through the eyes of the poster boy of Street Fighter, Ryu.

"But Ryu is boring, gootecks!"
I know, I know, you think Ryu is boring and everybody plays him and you want to play a cool, flashy character so you can style on people on stage at Evo someday. Unfortunately, you'll need to learn how to walk before you can run and there is no better investment of time as a new player than to learn Ryu in order to build a strong foundation.

As a newbie in fighting games who had only played tekken 3 back in the day, and had recently been bitten by the SFV hype, I feel that this ebook speaks directly to me. I knew who gootecks was from his Excellent Adventures show and his strong focus on learning the fundamentals has helped me win against my button masher friends without having to perform a single fireball or combos on my recently purchased SF3 Third Strike.

English is not my native tongue and I had no problem understanding this ebook as gootecks makes sure he gets his point across, my goal with SFV is to not get bodied by everyone when playing online and I really think ebooks like this will help me achieve it.

Simplifying Street Fighter is an absolute necessity if you want to take your level of ability in Street Fighter up several notches immediately. Gootecks quickly breaks down the basics of Street Fighter (including the very fundamental level of what you should or could be playing on as your hardware or connection could be huge limiting factors) and then introduces you to the Ryu gameplan.

The ideas of what you should be focusing on are presented very clearly and, especially if you never had any idea beforehand, the strategies of what you should look to see or implement when playing are broken down in a manner that anyone picking up Street Fighter for the very first time can appreciate. From there, Gootecks introduces you to how you should train (using the game's offline training mode), and hand holds you through the entire process.

This brings me to the immense added value that Gootecks has provided throughout and after purchasing this book. very good book (from a begginer that yet played tons and tons of SF3-4. I'd love it to be a little more extensive, maybe detailing some characters or game plans. But from the fighting games books i've read yet, this is my favourite one (coming from someone that is yet to decide if he likes gootecks).

This book has an amazing way of presenting its material in a way that the experimental physicist will love it. It does not only explains theoretically its issues but it gives numbers or ways how to come up to some conclusions of the real world. I am working in the laser fields for more than 8 years and I believe that this book has it all in one making complicated physics understandable.

Professor Ron Schramm is PhD Program Director of the International Business School of Suzhou (IBSS) at Xian Jiao Tong Liverpool University (XJTLU, China). He is the Area Editor in Finance for the International Journal of Emerging Markets and was a faculty member for over 25 years at the Columbia Business School, Columbia University in New York City. He was a Fulbright Scholar at UIBE in Beijing and has taught at 5 different universities in China.

Essential reading on China's economy

At a time when the global economy looks to China, a significant force on the macroeconomic stage, for insights into the quality and direction of its economic growth, through this engaging text, I gained significant insight into the key forces driving China's economy. Dr. Schramm leads the reader through China's historic and recent monetary and fiscal policies and their potential ramifications, with numerous learnings derived from U.S. case study as a comparative foundation. As a former student of Dr. Schramm at Columbia Business School, I enjoyed this text both because his analytical and case study-based approach brings to mind the instructive macroeconomic and finance frameworks he introduced in his emerging financial markets MBA course and because this text provides detailed historical, demographic, and institutional knowledge about China. His clarity in explaining complex financial issues and his exploration of currently vital topics such as China's approach to the monetary transmission mechanism and credit, capital account liberalization, and foreign exchange as its modern economic system evolves make this book an excellent resource and an exciting read.
