The Queen is back!

Renata is an empirical existentialist with a perfect ten body. She lives for pleasure full throttle and makes no excuses; she hooks for a living because it fits.

Richard is a poet, professor, husband and father obsessively in love with the above mentioned hooker. He's lost in his job, his marriage, his creativity and his quest for Renata's love. His attempts at coexistence with a normal life are spiraling out of control.

Julie is an aspiring writer paralyzed by insecurity and fear. Her need to prove herself with a tome worthy of daddy's praise places her in the path of a hurricane (both figuratively and literally). She's not quite sure if she's a lesbian or just another victim of love (love for Renata).

Francisco is also a hooker (the male version) and a small time drug dealer; a Florida version of a knockaround guy minus the traditional mob, although he does have business associates who make being around him dangerous. He's also Renata's lover of choice (as in she doesn't charge him), but is street savvy enough to understand the term "lover" as it applies to those who can't love; he's a convenience much the same way his job is a convenience to those requiring his services.

Pepe is a baby four foot python ... enough said.

Fans of Hendricks' special brand of noir erotica have been waiting five years for her latest sizzler and they'll be more than happy with Cruel Poetry. Spot on dialogue and an ability to absorb readers into her characters' dark worlds (worlds we can all relate to--whether they are dominated by obsession, jealousy, a failed marriage, a walk on the wild side, snakes or just an overwhelming need to feel complete) place Hendricks' noir at the forefront of the genre.

The poet's insatiable desire for Renata to love him has made a mess of his life. How his world comes apart piece by piece is fascinating and all too real. The good girl playing with dangerous people faces frightening consequences she can't imagine. Renata's emotional bond with Pepe (the cobra) reminds one of another of Hendrick's noir tales, Iguana Love. Renata can't feel love for people the way she can respect a snake (Pepe is genuine). Although she cares for people (Julie, Francisco and to some extent, even Richard), it will take a hurricane and a neatly wrapped surprise ending before she ever gets the chance to feel what everyone else around her seem so constrained by.

Vickie Hendricks remains the first Queen of Noir. Her much anticipated latest, Cruel Poetry, will draw you in with visceral, erotic and psychological obsessions. The ending will rock your world. Long live the Queen.

How low can you go?

In this, her latest novel, Hendricks, the undisputed queen of South Florida noir, plunges deeper into the pathological motivations of people who by some deep human flaw have shed most of their morals for survival.

Cruel Poetry drops some of the usual almost cartoonish noir devices Henricks fans have come to expect. Instead the reader is offered a more literary treat that puts her latest book on a par with more literary classics like "The Story of O" or the Marquis de Sade's writings.

For my taste, the first few sex scenes seemed a bit too obviously designed to pull in readers looking just for the steamy stuff, but it didn't take long for the plot to grab hold of me. Like Pepe, the slithering pet snake writhing along Renata's lovely limbs and trunk, it slowly gripped me. After that I couldn't put the book down.

Henricks manages in this novel to paint a truly vivid portrait of a woman living by impuse alone. Renata is a survivor pure and simple. Jules, the somewhat innocent neighbor who views Renata and her bizarre life of revolving sexual partners coupled with complicated loyalities through a peephole in the wall adjoining their rooms, struggles to retain her purity even as she is hypnotically drawn into Rennie and her boyfriend Francisco's steamy world of sex, alcohol and drug addcition, and murder.

The tension created by this is totally mesmerizing. Jules near fatal attraction to Renata is only matched by Richard, the unhappy English professor and failed poet who is willing to sacrifice anything to fufill his fantasy of redeeming the "whore" in Renata, and thereby perhaps redeeming himself.

One word of warning though. Don't read this book in public. You'd have to be dead not to be aroused by it.

How much you like this book...

...will be pretty much a function of how much you believe porn can replace an original plot in a noir novel. I gave up after a hundred pages or so (rare for me) because I want vividly drawn characters, not caricatures.

What I learned from this book is that there are a lot of 'live for the moment, beautiful people' in South Beach. Some of them are really exceptionally attractive, and they can get their way regardless of any other personal characteristics or deficiencies. And desire can drive otherwise sensible people to do dumb things with severe consequences.

In other words, there is nothing here that has not been done in scores of previous noir novels.

So, given that the cover is pretty reflective of what the book is, why did I pick it up? Because Michael Connelly, who has written only one weak book (Chasing the Dime) and a whole slew of fantastic ones praised Cruel Poetry to the hilt.

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but I think he really missed it on this one.

Knowing the truth will help you survive

I loved Mark Rich's first book, "The Hidden Evil", and this one is even better. The world is not as safe as it seems, and although technology makes our lives so easy, with instant communication world wide, it has an equal and opposite evil side. This book is an excellent introduction to the truth about how advanced technology is being used to experiment upon and control innocent non-consenting individuals.

In cities, in towns, in rural areas and in urban areas across America and indeed much of Europe, and in all NATO countries, military and intelligence agencies are running a horrific covert operation to muffle and stifle the voices of activists, writers, bloggers, and community activists and leaders, by irradiating them with potent remote-control radiation neuroweaponry, euphemistically termed non-lethal weapons, and secretly rolling them into nonconsensual weapons testing human experimentation programs. In collusion, Intel agencies "open investigations" of a bogus nature on these individuals, seeking to deny, dismiss, and discredit their accounts and testimony, while psychiatrists in the employ of Defense and the corporate Mafia often referred to as the Financial Elite, oblige by falsely labeling all witnesses paranoid schizophrenic and unstable. The military also runs excessive PsyOps on these people now falsely labelled "extremists' "dissenters" and "domestic terrorists" and, under the aegis of the Patriot Act and other rollbacks of civil liberties, subjects them to incessant surveillance, organized stalking, noise harassment, and other forms of covert abuse. A huge number of Citizen Stasi are involved. Universities running covert research programs for Defense in areas of neuroscience, behavioral science, artificial intelligence, and psychiatry are involved. This is happening to average everyday citizens in the US and elsewhere, it is happening to journalists, bloggers, writers, and anyone who speaks out in conscience or offers an ethical take on any issue, anyone who contacts members of Congress, anyone who seeks to influence lawmakers. Yet, today, in mid-2014, it is still not reported, not acknowledged, and not condemned by the human rights, investigative journalist, and legal bodies of the US and the world--it has clearly still not been fully exposed. But Mark Rich offers a detailed study of how these programs have been set up, how the military--through its own documentation--supports it, and how psychiatrists and medical personnel have been co-opted. A vital, necessary, and extremely significant work, whose importance will become increasingly apparent as more of the Snowden revelations are published. Kudos to Mark Rich. A must-read for anyone seeking to understand what the excesses of the tyranny practiced by a surveillance state have brought us to. And an absolute requisite for any investigative journalist and human rights investigator seeking information on the EMF, neuroweapon, and repressive abuses of secretly totalitarian governments of the 21st-century.

Both are gorgeous, and the many panels displaying them in skimpy spandex outfits are droolworthy. However, David's avowed purpose is to contrast Kara's sweet, klutzy naivete with Linda's more jaded adolescent angst. This aspect of the story works, especially when the more scientifically informed Linda patiently corrects Kara's assumptions about the extent of her superpowers. Working against this genial mood is the fact that a Supergirl eventually will have to die as part of DC's major megastory from 15 years ago, Crisis on Infinite Earths. Also, David feels constrained to use more characters from the DC stock company, including gleeful villain Xenon, who's having a fine time killing Supergirls one by one. And so the plot spins along, ransacking the career of Superman and company for events to stitch together and reinterpret in a fresh light. It's all ingenious but ultimately shallow. There's only so much lore that average readers can keep handy in memory, and this story line requires more than all but Supergirl loyalists can supply.

Too Revealing

Nice story, great art. Cannot give it 5 stars as it is a bit lewd. The outfits are too revealing, this is standard now with both D. C. and Marvel. Comics would sell without pushing the sex and the audience would again be appropriate for kids. When I grew up in the late 60's and 70's comics were more modest and kids loved them. The target audience it seems now must be older teens and adults. A shame really. (At least in the movies they are not as crude).

A great read.

OK so yet another DC story in which they put two different incarnations of a character against each other. DC has done this many times before in various time/reality bending stories. And yet as with many things about super hero comics Peter David simply does it better. Whereas many of these stories are little more than having a good laugh at the silver age's expense, PAD does more than that. He shows that super hero comics have matured as a genre and even an art form, but also, that in that growth, has maybe lost something. Something special, something fun, something pure. Perhaps in an age of MAX and Vertigo, a little silver age innocence once in a while wouldn't hurt us.

And as always PAD really shines when it comes to characterization. I went into this knowing very little about the Linda Danvers Supergirl. She was an Earth girl bonded with the alien matrix Supergirl and then something about an angel...or something. But her confusing origin aside within a few pages I felt like I knew her as a person.

A must read for any Peter David fan.

A superhuman story that is surprisingly touching

Peter David is often regarded as one of the best writers in comics, and there is good reason for that. He spent years writing the Incredible Hulk for Marvel (and still remains the best writer to ever tackle the character), and with this final arc for the old Supergirl series for DC, David takes his love for the classic pre-Crisis age stories and infuses them with a modern edge. Linda Danvers is the brunette, blonde-wig wearing earth bound Supergirl who now finally has the respect of her fellow super heroes and she has a grip on her life now as well. Naturally, none of it lasts long. Out of the sky comes blonde haired, cheery, and naive Kara Zor-El, claiming to be Superman's cousin Supergirl. What neither girl knows is that reality is being played around with, and that Kara is destined to die in the penultimate battle from Crisis on Infinite Earths. I don't want to go into anymore because the story that develops is surprisingly touching and offers up some even more surprises to boot. Not to mention that Ed Benes' (Birds of Prey) gorgeous pencil work conjures up some truly drool worthy interpretations of the female form. Because the title never really sold all that well, Many Happy Returns ended up being the final arc for the title, which is all the more fitting a send off. Much like Clark Kent learns in the final frames of the last pages, new readers will learn that this was a book that was often misunderstood by many, but loved by a dedicated few. Forget the relaunched Supergirl title (first by Jeph Loeb in the pages of Superman/Batman) and check this out, you won't regret it.
