Sentimental Journey

David Doyle's new Squadron at Sea series starts off with a bang with his first volume covering the USS Arizona. The style is a bit different from other books in that the story is told by a series of photographs with detailed, but generally concise explanations. Topics will tend to start with the building of the ship, its service life, modifications, notable events including combat damage or known occasions. With a different twist, the author wishes to end his work with the vessel's final disposition be it scrapped, sunk or turned into a museum which in the USS Arizon's case, all three occurred.

It's easy to get lost in all the video game violence or monday morning quarterbacking of historical analysis. Mr Doyle uses the unsual photograph assisted medium to relate a haunting, personal and deeply touching recount of the way things really were. He is well prepared, knowledgeable not only about the history, but of the human condition. The pictures are brimming with details, and the captions will often cue in the reader into details that may be difficult to see, not readily apparent, to eye candy or just to the background and spirit of the shots. Above all, the book comes across as very respectful of the ship and people on board, particularly the ones that perished before their time.

For all Historic Naval Ship buffs, this unusual book is a must read. This book would also be highly appealing to modelers. Of note, the photos are from many, many different sources some of which are easier to contact than others. The cost of obtaining all the photos from all the different sources yourself would be far, far higher and you'd still be without Mr. Doyle's wonderful captions that breathe life into them. The diversity of photographs and their significance showing ship updates pertinent to changing technology, cultural and geographhic references of the time period would also appeal to anthropologists or historians wishing to deepen their knowledge of the early 20th century. In short, this book is a real treat for anyone peripherally interested in the topic and I am happy I got to read it.

Note: I was given this book for free to write a review. Nonetheless, if you've clicked this far, you will probably enjoy the book. I highly recommend it; go ahead and buy it, you won't be sorry.

My husband and I were going to Pearl Harbor and I bought him this book before we went. He got a lot out of it and especially loved all the pictures. I am glad I purchased it for him!

An American Mystic! This book is about a man’s journey “through many dangers, toils and snares...” to an awakening that both astonished and surprised him.
This is a man who worked for the FBI, Army Intelligence, an Arthur Murray dance instructor, a Napoleon Hill “Think And Grow Rich” trainer, divinity student, and the consummate entrepreneur. He lived life to the hilt, exploring its pleasures and pains.
It offers a rich comparison of how the life of ego-mind identification need not negate the journey of awakening; rather, it can both complement that journey and be a fecund opportunity to grow into a spiritual adult who is awake to realizing who he truly is.
The book is well written, moves quickly, and is rife with photographs, rich content and valuable insights. It not about The Path to awakening; rather, it is about A Path. The path of an American Mystic, Five stars!

A wonderful book sharing A. Ramana's life

I only met Ramana once so this is a great way to know him and to share in his story. I've only read about half and look forward to the rest of the story. It's an important story because he helped so many. Even if you didn't know him, you will feel as though you do when you read his memoirs. And if you knew him well, you will enjoy the memories.

I really enjoyed the story of Ramana, who what Texan that became enlightened, this story spans from him being a child to his death. I really appreciated the honesty given in this book, in which helps one to feel that we all start at the same place even though it might look different. This was a long book but well worth reading, and I'll definitely be reading it again, it has so much insight at times, you feel like you are there with Ramana, by the end of the book I felt like I had met him, spent time with him, he sounds like a wonderful being. I wish there was a bit more personal stuff about Ramana's interactions in India as opposed to so much information on India. But otherwise a very satisfying read, and if you are in anyway interested in learning about someone who is enlightened I think you should pick up this book. Reading about Ramana touched me deeply.

About the Author
Patrick O'Flanagan is a Professor and Head of the Department of Geography at University College Cork, Ireland. Most of his academic career has been spend at this university. He has maintained close links with all of the Atlantic universities on the Iberian peninsula and especially with the university of Santiago de Compostela. He has published widely on the historical and cultural geography of the Iberian peninsula.

A very important book.

A very enlightening and insightful book, a must-read for all people who work in fields where creative thought is required or expected.
I bought both electronic and paper editions.

This book was only recently made available after a long hiatus. It's a very important book and I'm glad we didn't lose it.

Carolin Rekar Munro is the Associate Professor and Intellectual Lead for Leadership and Human Resources in the MBA and B.Com programs for the Faculty of Management at Royal Roads University in British Columbia. She is also an adjunct professor for Central Michigan University's Global Campus, teaching in the MA in Education. She received her Masters' and Doctoral degrees with a focus on developing human resources and leadership from the University of Toronto. She also has a Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation from the Human Resources Professionals Association, a Certified Training and Development (CTDP) designation from the Canadian Society for Training and Development, and is certified in values-based leadership from the Barrett Centre, Myers-Briggs Personality Inventory, and Emotional Quotient Inventory. Carolin manages a successful consulting practice, Eye of the Tiger Consulting(www.eyeofthetigerconsulting.ca), in which she collaborates with leaders on change management, employee engagement, organizational renewal, strategic planning, performance management, developing and sustaining high performing teams, succession management, and leadership development (for aspiring leaders, executives, and the youth community).
