A Must-Read Book for the Power System Engineer at the Leading Edge

Steve Sandler's new book, "Power Integrity," is what many of us in the power industry have been waiting for. As power densities and switching speeds increase, the challenge of measurement and optimization grows disproportionately. Steve has a wonderful ability to walk the reader through all the fundamentals and then take you to the next level of understanding. This book is a must-have companion for any engineer wanting to design power systems at the leader edge.

A must have!

I've worked in a power conversion and delivery lab environment as an engineering technician for eleven years; and this is the first reference book I've seen that covers this very important topic. This book is a must have for any engineer, or technician, who makes measurements in a lab environment. It is very easy to read and understand, with many pictures of test setups and waveform captures to aid in measurement applications. I am also currently attending electrical engineering school, and feel this book would be extremely helpful in the lab environment for students who have little to no experience making measurements.

Many real world examples and measurement pitfalls, that would normally take someone years to learn by trial and error, are included in the book, with an index for quick reference. Steve worked with many test equipment vendors, and with several different models of equipment. This is important because we don’t all have the same equipment on our benches; but the odds are your model, or something like your model, is covered in this book.

I especially appreciate the fact that Steve covers component data sheets, and how the specifications in them can be misleading. This is important to understand because it leads to designs that do not perform as expected. He explains areas to watch out for with examples.

The second half of the book goes over important measurements for power distribution networks (how and why). Stability, current transient response, impedance measurements, and much more are covered in this section.

Thanks to Steve Sandler for spending the many hours it took to thoroughly understand and explain the many measurements and pitfalls associated with power-related parameters!

fills a gap on the market Steven Sandler: Power Integrity

Together with my colleagues I was looking for a longer time for an appropriate book in the power supply/PDN measurements topic, that is primarily strongly praxis/measurement oriented.
We ordered more examples of this book at the end of 2014. The book was at that time not even available on the market, we did not really know, what will we get. There were no customer reviews available at that time.
After receiving the books it did not take us long to realize, that the book meets all our expectations, and even much more...
The book is written in an easy to read and comprehend style, although theoretically well-founded.
The coloured pictures, diagrams and schematics make it simply delightful, it was a great idea to do it this way.

Mr. Sandler's: Power Integrity is used almost on a daily basis in our work, and it is an appreciated peace of our library.
We can strongly recommend the book to every practicing engineer involved/interested in power supply and PDN design/measurement topics.

Change And The Generation Gap

Adolescence is a time in which the behaviors of childhood are abandoned and the roles of adulthood are taken up. This book describes the different ways in which youths arrive at their adult roles.

In very stable, unchanging cultures youths learn from both their parents and their grandparents how to act as adults. These are postfigurative cultures, thus named because they look back to the past for guidance. Many native cultures were postfigurative before they gained access western culture via radio and TV.

Societies which exist in a state of change are called cofigurative cultures. Many western cultures in the twentieth century are examples of this. In this circumstance both youths and adults learn from their peers. Much of the past must be abandoned as new circumstances arrive demanding new behaviors.

Mead proposes that a third, prefigurative culture may emerge in the future. This type of society is subject to continued, radical change. In it adults learn from their children. Youths have the adaptability to cope with rapid change. They must 'make up' their behavior as they go along. Peers can help but even they remain largely ignorant of 'what is right' as change is so rapid.

This book was written just after the counter-culture of the 1960s. At the time it must have seemed that the world was going to experience an alarming rate of change. As a result of the baby boom youth seemed to be taking over the world. Prefigurative culture never eventuated but of course that is not to say it can never happen.

An indispensible text for serious practioners

This is not a how-to, it is a how-to-understand. I own multiple editions of this book starting with the 3rd, when many of the examples referred to RBase. It won't tell you, with simple color diagrams and cut-and-paste examples, how to optimize your Oracle SQL queries or tune your DB/2 engine, but it will teach you the underlying principles of relational databases, from which the serious professional will be able to extrapolate. If you have the intelligence and stomach for it and you actually read it, it will serve you much better than the SQL in 24 hours picture books that some reviewers seem to be looking for -- it is a timeless and effective conceptual work on the subject that spans the evolution of commercial product implementations. Dilitantes and desperadoes, head for the Dummies aisle -- this one's not for you.

An Introduction for Software Engineers, not Users

Sorry, no full-color graphics, and no included disk full of fill-in-the-blank examples and wizards to build your contact list. This is an old-fashioned academic tome, not a how-to book or thinly-disguised marketing tool for some commercial database system.
I suppose the biggest criticism I could make of this book is that it overestimates the target audience. Unfortunately, many who see the title of this book assume that it will teach them how to work with current database products such as Oracle, or maybe SQL Server and Access. No, this book doesn't show you how to create an invoicing system for your bicycle shop, or a web content management system. What it will show you is the conceptual underpinning of the relational data model, how to understand relational database systems in general (not everything is SQL, you know), and provide some heavy insight into how relational databases should be designed.
In that sense, it can be considered an "introductory" book for software engineers, who might themselves create a new database management system. It can also be considered introductory for database administrators and systems programmers who are looking to expand their knowledge beyond the product-specific practical methods they have been exposed to. In other words, if you just want to know "how things are done" in your industry, don't read this book. If you want some insights into how things COULD be done much better, you might want to read this book.
So, while I might not recommend this book to a junior programmer tasked with creating his/her first web-based ordering system, I might recommend it to the company DBA or systems architect. Even more, I would recommend this book to anyone studying C/C++, and looking to start a career in software engineering, possibly to help create new database systems. This book doesn't discuss specific implementation in C++ or anything like that but it provides an excellent target feature set and language spec for development, as well as a clarification of the formal logic behind relational database management.

Best theoretical book on Database design ever!

I read this book for training as a senior DBA consultant and enjoyed CJ Date's excellent treatise on databases. This is the ultimate book on database theory. Like another reader commented its not how to get OCP/MCDBA whatever certifications but actually will make life better in the long run as a serious DBA pro. I now actually understand the basis of complex database topics such as cursors, data models, and concurrency/locking topics that previously are skimmed over in other books and training guides. Best book for a beginner and yeah its a bit dry and academic but CJ Date writes clearly. A MUST FOR SERIOUS COMPUTER SCIENCE STUDENTS!

Useful for getting to grips with this huge topic, recommended

I purchased this through Google Books, but thought it worthwhile to put in a review.

This is a huge topic, it's great to see common sense, practical experience and the available best practice models bought together to help.
Graphics were a bit simple but hey...
My only other concern is that common sense and good strategies as articulated here could be mistaken for a licence to "consult" you to death.

I have worked in multi-sourced IT service delivery, IT management and architecture on both sides of the "fence" for over 20 years and it is fraught with misconceptions, overpromising and what I think is the general immaturity of IT and lack of business and IT management training, this current movement seems to be in response to those chickens coming home to roost in large corporates.

This book will provide tools and ideas for those grappling with the issues. Encouraging, leading and cajoling organisations up the IT maturity curve within the context of changing customer expectations, new technology and outdated sourcing arranagements is our biggest challenge. This will help and provide a practical perspective. (Assuming of course that you can get the dollars for a non IT delivery project as this seems to be the glue to long term success.)

Cultural and objective focussed changes, sourcing contracts, development and portfolio management changes, delivery management, tooling and vendor coordination all while dealing with disparate agendas, wow, good luck everybody. I am sure you will find this foray into the territory of SIAM very informative..

Looks Like A Good Book However Is NOT The FIRST Book On SIAM

This book covers the multi-sourcing in a decent way but then this is what Supplier Management, Multi-Supplier Integration (MSI) and Service Management Integration (SMI) has been focusing on. SIAM has to go beyond that and must address the business needs around service management as a whole. It cannot restrict to IT service management. However I disagree with the claim that this is the first book on SIAM.

This is not the FIRST book on SIAM. "Making SIAM Work - Adopting Service Integration And Management For Your Business" is the first book on SIAM. The FIRST book on SIAM is available at:

Excellent text on statistical biomedical signal analysis

I am using this book as a primary textbook in a Biomedical Engineering undergraduate course on Biomedical signal analysis. The students in this class come with a fairly good background in linear systems, stochastic processes and physiology, and the purpose of the course is to integrate this knowledge, and actually apply it to real-world statistical biomedical signals. Previous iterations of the course relied on a general statistical signals book (Bendat & Piersol), together with physiological examples provided by the instructor, since physiological signals books were too shallow. The current book, however, elegantly integrates the statistical signal analysis topics with the relevant biomedical applications, and it became an obvious choice. Moreover, unlike general engineering textbooks, this book doesn't shy away from methods for treating nonstationary signals (segmentation, time-frequency analysis, wavelets, detection...), as these are so fundamental in characterizing biomedical signals. Such topics are typically treated in a multitude of specialized books, and are therefore difficult to integrate coherently into a short course.

To improve: since the book's focus is on EEG and ECG, it could be great if the authors added a chapter on source localization/inverse problems, which arise in both systems. Although this is a huge topic in its own, one could do some basic justice to this important topic in a limited space as well, and thereby introduce students to ill-posed problems and their regularization. I was also slightly dissapointed that there is very little on error bounds in compound estimates (correlation and spectral density functions).

About the Author
Quentin Phillipps was born in Sandakan, Sabah and has been interested in the wildlife and natural history of Sabah all his life. Educated at Sabah College, Bedales and Kings College Cambridge, at age 17 he won the Wildlife Photographer of the Year (junior section) for the first-ever photograph of a nesting Chestnut-headed Thrush (taken at Poring).

Great plates (some re-used) for all species; unique format

Basics: 2010, 368pages, softcover; 141 good color plates of all 660+ species found on Borneo, 11 pages and 11 maps show 100+ birding sites; brief text covers identification, song and range; natural history notes scattered throughout the book

This is another nice book to add to the few that cover all the birds on the island of Borneo. Like the recently published "A Field Guide to the Birds of Borneo" by Myers, this new book by Phillipps focuses on just those 660+ birds found on Borneo. These are shown with about 2,000 different illustrations, with a greater number dedicated to the non-passerines. The shorebirds and raptors receive a greater proportion of illustrations.

To clarify "new", this book is actually a combination of newly created plates plus older plates taken from "A Field Guide to the Birds of Borneo, Sumatra, Java and Bali". This source book from 1993 was also illustrated by Phillipps. In all, only 55 (40%) of the 141 plates are new. The remaining plates use the same illustrations and poses pulled directly from the older book. A few new illustrations are sometimes injected amongst the old illustrations. The older plates have been slightly modified. Some have the illustrations enlarged by about 30%. Others have undergone minor touch-ups with coloration or background. As an example, the stick on which the Scarlet Minivet is perched now sports a little bit of dangling moss versus the original bare branch. Another difference is many of the birds in the older plates have been rearranged into two or three plates, which allows for larger illustrations of each bird.

Except for a few plates, the artwork is very good and does a nice job at showing the plumage details and patterns as well as the bird's posture. Some plates, such as the Jungle-Flycatchers, are very nicely done. The effort put into the three species of frigatebird is also commendable. Each bird receives its own plate showing at least 8 different illustrations that cover the highly variable age and gender differences. The highly colorful pittas have been repainted and both plates look great. In contrast, the plate showing the Green, Whitehead's and Hose's Broadbills as well as the plate with the plain spiderhunters are sketchy and unchanged from the original 1993 publication.

The text is the weaker component of this field guide, which consists of 5-8 lines per bird. There is very little descriptive or identification material given. At best, a dozen words may be offered for only similar species. The remainder of the information describes the range of the bird on Borneo and provides notes on its habitat. Descriptions of its voice are also given. What this means is most or all of your field identification will be based solely on the plates.

One other small critique is the number of birds shown by only a single illustration. This is unfortunately also true for nearly half of the 51 endemics.

Each bird is accompanied by a small range map that uses four different colors. These represent coastal seabirds and mainland residents, migrants, and endemics. I really like the special attention of using red to denote the range for each of the endemic birds. I wish more field guides would draw attention to the endemics to make them stand out. This is immediately useful for the travelling birder who may be more unfamiliar with the local avifauna.

The author's have made a detour from the typical field guide format which I think works in a positive manner. Scattered throughout the book are small inserts of natural history notes. Examples are "Why some cuckoos mimic birds of prey" and "Japanese birds that winter in Borneo." At first, these seem to be a distraction. Now, I like these additions. They don't bulk up the book in any significant manner, yet offer some true reading material when you're done or tired of studying the plates for identification.

Another twist is the inclusion of 100+ birding sites on the island. This adds only 22 pages to the book: Eleven for text and another 11 pages to display large well-marked maps. The text provides directions on how to find the many localities along with listing target birds and many of the expected birds. I think this is a good strategy to include maps and birding site locations within a field guide - especially for travelling birders. I like to carry only one book versus several so long as the book does not become too bulky - which it does not in this case.

Which book should you take to Borneo: Myers's or Phillipps's? Really, it doesn't matter because both are good books. Each has its unique format that differs from most other field guides. My personal preference is Phillipps's due to the artwork, the greater number of illustrations, and, the notes and maps. However, the identification material in Myer's is definitely better. Wish I'd had this for Borneo

This is a review of the second edition of this book. Below is my review from the first edition which still holds true but with a few notes on the second edition differences. There are some great updates to the first edition. Several of the plates have been updated noticeably including the Spiderhunters, Blue Flycatchers, Trogons, Hornbills, Broadbills and several plates include food flowers and fruits preferred by the species. New taxonomic information has been included as well as info about the newly discovered Spectacled Flowerpecker. There is also a new birding site map to go with the 12 from the first edition along with more updated information. Also the introduction to birding in Borneo has more updated information and the habitat pages denote endemics with a red star. The endemics page loses the facing plate of Bald-headed Laughingthrush and is replaced with a fabulous plate of Spectacled Flowerpecker with it's inclusion in the islands now 52 endemics. This really is now leaps and bounds ahead of anything else for the island, this goes beyond being just a bird guide to Borneo and into a birding guide to Borneo, you'll find yourself not just enjoying the fantastic plates but absorbing the ornithological history, fauna and an insight of the island along the way, essential!

Review of first edition:(with notes on second edition)

Typical, you wait for a guide to come out then two come at once. I found out this was coming out from my guide in Borneo in 2009 and quickly tracked it down once it was available and I'm glad I did. I had taken Mackinnon and Phillipps Birds of Borneo, Sumatra, Java and Bali (link below) with me and this did quite well but having a Borneo specific guide would have been better. This is a vast improvement over the old guide. First thing I noticed was a handy quick reference guide on the inside cover. Great if you're in the field and want to find some species fast. Each member of a bird family is depicted with a page number you can flip to in a hurry. Then come seven pages of habitat plates with species typically found in those habitats. Then come 24 pages (22 in the second edition) of information about birds and birding in Borneo that has helpful information about how to use the book, facts about Borneo's birds, a list of endemics, notes about vegetation, altitudinal zones and altitudes of mountains, climate, rainfall, migration and glossary, that are all quite informative. Then comes 281 pages of plates (284 in the second edition) with very good artwork by Karen Phillipps. Many of the plates contain work from the earlier book and though a few plates are crowded most have nice spacing and show the work in a nice large size for ease of identification. On the facing plate is information about habitat and distribution, call and range. The range maps are good and in color showing distribution and style of habitat throughout Borneo. Also interspersed throughout the book are little yellow boxes with interesting facts about the species concerned which adds a more personal touch and brings you closer to the birds through someone that has lived there. Following the plates are 11 area maps (12 in the second edition)showing birding locations with GPS and notes about what you will find there. Overall this is a brilliant book, though notes on identification in the text would be helpful for a few confusing species. Not just a field guide but also bird history, where to find birds and more. This is the only guide I'd take to Borneo if I was going back. There is now a second edition with updated and revised text.

Very much complete and well illustrated!

This book is very well illustrated and does provide very useful information on how to identify the Birds of Borneo (it is also useful for several localities outside of Borneo). I am a biologist but not a professional ornithologist, but using this book I was able to identify all of the bird species I have observed in the Kinabalu and Danum Valley regions.

In addition to the very nice color plates, there is text information on the principal characteristics, and some information on how to differentiate taxa from similar ones - this is particularly useful for someone not familiar with the birds in the region. Data on distribution and biology (when available) are also helpful.

Some caution is required when drawing conclusions from the findings discussed in this book

The findings discussed in this book come from a wide variety of sources, ranging from scientific studies, to observed phenomena such as people coming together to get something done quickly with the help of technologies, and to anecdotes given to the author.

While many of the findings indicate that technology does have positive and useful roles to play in people's lives, in some cases, it's not clear to me whether we can categorically assert that technology has made someone smarter.

Take, for example, the observation that with the rise of software that can play chess with humans, and the increased opportunities for humans to gain chess playing knowledge and experience by playing against such software opponents, the age at which chess players are able to attain grandmastership status has also come down as well. Can we categorically conclude from such a finding that competing against chess-playing software has a causal relationship to making someone a smarter chess player sooner, as evidenced by the younger ages of recently minted grandmasters (compared to the ages of grandmasters from decades ago)? It seems to me there could be alternative explanations for such a finding.

Or take the findings that technology can help improve our memory (i.e., remember things more readily or for a longer time). While the ability to remember things is important to our ability to reason about things, memory improvements do not equate to, nor necessarily lead to, improvements in reasoning ability.

Some of the findings discussed in this book do show, however, that well-designed computer games, for example, can be used effectively to hone children's reasoning abilities, at least with respect to some domains, as evidenced by test score differences.

Overall, I think this book is worth considering. The author rambles on and digresses every now and then, and some of the evidence marshalled to support the book's main thesis (that technology is making us smarter) can be rather weak, but for the most part, the findings discussed in this book are interesting.

The Anti-Shallows...

If you've read The Shallows by Nicholas Carr (a great book in its own right), then you can consider this book on the 180-degree opposite end of the spectrum.

This book by Clive Thompson investigates technology from the standpoint of the positive aspects as it applies to your life and mind.

And I have to say, both books present their case well. I thoroughly enjoyed Clive's engaging writing style (Nicholas is more "academic"). He even mixes a little humor into the book.

If you're interested in the "effects of technology on the mind" I highly recommend this book.

Why not 5 stars?

I think the author could have backed up his case a little bit better by approaching the book in a more academic way, while sticking to his engaging writing style. Not that this book lacks research by any means, it just could have been less "RAH RAH, technology" and more "this is exactly why what I'm saying is proven."

A thesis worth considering, a book worth reading

In his memoir, The Measure of a Man, Sidney Poitier compared his quiet childhood on Cat Island in the Bahamas with the noisy, technology driven world in which urban kids grow up today. "We put our kids through fifteen years of quick-cut advertising, passive television watching, and sadistic video games, and we expect to see emerge a new generation of calm, compassionate, and engaged human beings?"

In Smarter Than You Think, Clive Thompson acknowledges that argument. "Some people panic that our brains are being deformed on a physiological level by today's technology," he writes. At the same time, he believes that the concern that technology is rewiring our brains is premature and that "it is rash to draw conclusions, either apocalyptic or utopian."

The author does not concern himself with the way our brains are possibly being "rewired" ("Almost everything rewires it, including this book"), but instead focuses on how our intellects are being improved when our brains work in tandem with technology.

Our memories, faultier than we like to believe, are strengthened by technology's ability to record events through video, email, texts, and with cell phone cameras and recording devices. It's easier than ever to preserve the past. As Thompson writes, "in 1981, a gigabyte of memory cost roughly three hundred thousand dollars, but now it can be had for pennies."

Some of the people interviewed are so obsessive about recording as much as possible that they are called "lifeloggers." One wonders, certainly I do, if all this recording for future reference hinders the ability to fully experience life in the present?

In Thompson's view, the present is preferable to the past whose glories are more imagined than real. Before the Internet, the average person only wrote as a requirement in the classroom. Now there are blogs, discussion boards, fan fiction, emails, texts - Amazon customer reviews like this one - "a foaming Niagara of writing." It may be "an ocean of dreck, dotted sporadically by islands of genius," but he agrees with Theodore Sturgeon's observation that "Ninety percent of everything is crap." Regardless of its quality, all this writing "can help clarify our thinking."

Technology is not only changing traditional reading and writing, but creating new forms of literacy. Everything from movies and television to politics is changing, often for the better. In the past, moving images moved too fast for careful analysis. Now anyone can pause video, scan it frame-by-frame, re-edit the contents and post it online. "No sooner does a politician make an appearance on television than political junkies and activists have scanned in the video, uploaded it, clipped out statements, and begun debating what was said."

Technology is also helping to create social change as people connect with each other online and organize for action.

The possibilities are endless, and Thompson believes that they have yet to be tapped. "We're not thinking big enough, or weird enough. A tool's most transformative uses generally take us by surprise."

That may be the problem. How will all this technology be used to threaten our freedom and ability to think and make decisions for ourselves especially if someone "weird enough" is at the switch? Thompson acknowledges the dangers. "Like all new tools," he writes," we'll also have to negotiate how not to use it."

I don't know if all this technology is really making us Smarter Than You Think, but Thompson argues convincingly in favor of his thesis and even a skeptic like myself believes it is worth considering.
