Concrete Economics: The Hamilton Approach to Economic Growth and Policy, by Stephen S. Cohen, J. Bradford DeLong

“an excellent new book” — Paul Krugman, The New York Times

History, not ideology, holds the key to growth.

Brilliantly written and argued, Concrete Economics shows how government has repeatedly reshaped the American economy ever since Alexander Hamilton’s first, foundational redesign.

This book does not rehash the sturdy and long-accepted arguments that to thrive, entrepreneurial economies need a broad range of freedoms. Instead, Steve Cohen and Brad DeLong remedy our national amnesia about how our economy has actually grown and the role government has played in redesigning and reinvigorating it throughout our history. The government not only sets the ground rules for entrepreneurial activity but directs the surges of energy that mark a vibrant economy. This is as true for present-day Silicon Valley as it was for New England manufacturing at the dawn of the nineteenth century.

The authors’ argument is not one based on abstract ideas, arcane discoveries, or complex correlations. Instead it is based on the facts—facts that were once well known but that have been obscured in a fog of ideology—of how the US economy benefited from a pragmatic government approach to succeed so brilliantly.

Understanding how our economy has grown in the past provides a blueprint for how we might again redesign and reinvigorate it today, for such a redesign is sorely needed.

ADVANCE PRAISE for Concrete Economics:

Lawrence H. Summers, Charles W. Eliot University Professor, Harvard University—
“Cohen and DeLong’s polemical style adds a distinctive voice to economic policy debates. This book may enlighten and infuriate. It is a bold effort by bold thinkers.”

Michael Lind, author, Land of Promise: An Economic History of the United States—
“In a dynamic economy, private enterprise and public leadership are partners, not adversaries. That is the lesson of the past for the future, drawn by two of the finest economic thinkers of the present in this timely and important book.”

A great read by economists ho know how to write well
By Interested customer
I have struggled through a number of books on economics, trying understand what Is happening to our country under the aegis o the Fed. This is by far the best I have read. Not only is the discussion of economic issues good, the book is very well written, holding my interest for long periods at a time.

The book advanced two messages, with one of which I am in full agreement, and one of which I was originally quite skeptical, but found that I had least gained new perspectives. First, our area of complete agreement--the financial sector of our economy has become far too substantial. And it's growth has provided no benefits to the economy that we weren't enjoying before its growth, which has been of benefit only to those who control these intermediaries. Second, our less agreed position. The authors, being college professors, are much of the view that government is what makes it all happen, whereas I am of the view that it is private enterprise that makes the economy go around. My conclusion is that we really don't differ. The key to government intervention in the economy is to adopt policies which facilitate an d encourage entrepreneurial activity by the private sector. On the other hand, policies such as the elimination of regulation from businesses which require restraint makes no sense except to the ideologue.

Overall;, an excellent presentation by writers to whom I am philosophically opposed. Exactly what I want to read.

Useful but not essential
By Robert P.
Presents some helpful if very brief summaries of government interventions in support of economic development throughout American history. Unfortunately many of the ideas are not clearly developed or given long enough treatment. It reads, imo, like a draft or a collection of class notes. (An editor could help with some of those overlong and convoluted sentences.) As a supporting text to a course on American economic history the book could be useful and perhaps that was the author's intention. All of the economic eras discussed in the book are covered in more depth and with greater clarity in other works. If the reader is looking for a brief and light introduction to the history of fiscal and monetary policy (in practice not theory) this book could be a useful starting point. The book's concept of promoting non-ideological, "whatever works" government economic intervention sounds fine but the argument for how such policy should be developed is sketchy.

Thoughtful and informative
By BDY
This is a terrific book that should be required reading for anyone involved in making or discussing national economic policy. It destroys a lot of myths by showing how government involvement in the economy, in the US and elsewhere, has been critical to growth and especially to the advance of technology within the country.

Ayrton Senna: All His Races, by Tony Dodgins

This definitive record of Ayrton Senna's racing life provides detailed coverage of every single race in which he competed, including Formula Ford, Formula 3 and Formula 1, in addition to one-off appearances and tests in other categories, such as the World Sports Car Championship and Indy Car. The compelling text features insightful new material drawn from interviews with many of Senna's rivals and colleagues - from early opponent Calvin Fish to Williams team-mate Damon Hill - and is accompanied by a rich array of high-quality period photographs captured through the lenses of Sutton Images, where brothers Keith and Mark Sutton between them followed Senna's meteoric career from the very beginning. Graced with a foreword by Martin Brundle, Senna's great rival in Formula 3 during 1983, this top-quality book provides a fitting tribute to a Formula 1 legend whose legacy today extends far beyond the world of motor racing.

- The karting years: racing in Brazil and South America between 1973 and 1977, and Senna's efforts to win the elusive karting World Championship between 1978 and 1981.

- Formula Ford 1600 and 2000: racing with the Van Diemen works team in 1981, before progressing to FF2000 in 1982, dominating the British and European championships.

- Formula 3: the battle with Martin Brundle for the 1983 British F3 Championship.

- Formula 1 baptism with Toleman: nearly winning the rain-shortened Monaco Grand Prix, and qualifying third at Estoril, behind Piquet's Brabham and Prost's McLaren.

- The Lotus years, 1985â??87: Senna's first wins, at Estoril and Spa in 1985, two more wins in 1986, and his final Lotus year, with wins in Monaco and Detroit, before signing for McLaren for the 1988 season.

- The McLaren years, 1988â??93: first world title in 1988 followed by an acrimonious year with team-mate Alain Prost in 1989.

- Two further world titles in 1990 and 1991, but then Williams emerges to dominate with Nigel Mansell (1992) and Alain Prost (1993), Senna winning five races in his final year for McLaren.

- The final season (1994): driving for a no-longer-dominant Williams, struggling to take the fight to Benetton and Michael Schumacher, before tragically losing his life at Imola.

A NEW book on Senna... and (shocking) a GREAT one!!
By anaveragejoe
Nicely done, Mr. Dodgins, bravo!! I was nervous about getting "another" book on Senna... I have dozens. But I must say, THIS ONE IS DIFFERENT. It's not just all the races, chronologically. It's also a fantastic journey of both a truly all-encompassing overview, and really terrific tidbits of "episodes" occurring during races, or because of races, or as a result of races. And many times these episodes are accentuated with latter-day additions to those events. A really great book... as much fun to read as it is to leaf through. I would think this would be a great book for old-time Senna fans such as myself, and for new fans who want a fantastic overview and true glimpses into who Senna "really" was. Thank you for pursuing this Mr. Dodgins, and to the publisher! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED by this Senna fan since 1985. Buy this book - you will not be disappointed, for sure. Also, beautifully printed, and terrific color photo's throughout. Great book!

Keep this book handy at all times.
By A Customer
Many of us were taught by parents and teachers that the only way we could be "good" was to struggle. We were taught that struggle is noble. Wilde debunks this widely held myth and helps us rid our minds of this tape running there. He compares struggle vs. effort and identifies struggle as effort laced with negative emotion. He posits that "going with the flow" is a much better approach. This may sound simplistic, but many of us forget this simple lesson in our day to day battles out in the fray. Keep this book handy. I have re-read mine many, many times and it helps me get re-centered and concentrate on what is truly important in my life. Also, you may want a couple for friends as you will begin to identify the patterns of struggle in others. Wilde asks us to teach others to forego their struggle, and ultimately live.

This book is a gem!
By Thomas H. DeRamus
At the risk of sounding like a commercial, this booklet is a genuine bargain, so do yourself a favor by including it on your next order from Amazon. Unlike a lot of other writers, Stuart Wilde is terse. He certainly doesn't waste words in advancing his assertion that effort in life is natural, but struggle is stupid. He quickly identifies the major strugglers we all see around us and tells how to cease struggling by eliminating negative emotions.

It helped change my life......and then some.......
By Andrew J. DiLiddo Jr.
I have little to add that the other POSITIVE reviewers have not already said. I also agree that if you purchase this book, purchase more than one because you may be able to "carry the message" to others who have not yet learned the lesson of this book. What I do have to add is merely a personal anecdote about the book. I stumbled upon the book in a gift shop on a small book rack in a tourist area. The title slapped me upside the head, like a brick hitting me. I was always taught in my family that I wasn't a "good" person unless I struggled and that struggle was noble (as other reviewers note). I too carried the book with me in my brief case and re-read it often. I also learned that I have had to un-learn many mindsets inculcated into my psyche by parents and others. One sad note though: I have largely removed struggle from life using resources beyond this book as well. However, its sad when I return to my family and see them struggling, not having learned the lesson(s) I have been blessed to learn.

Cultural Anthropology: A Toolkit for a Global Age, by Kenneth J. Guest

Inspires students to think like anthropologists in a multicultural and global age.

Covering the essential concepts that drive cultural anthropology today, Ken Guest’s Cultural Anthropology: A Toolkit for a Global Age shows students that now, more than ever, global forces affect local culture and that the tools of cultural anthropology are essential to living in a global society. A “toolkit” approach encourages students to pay attention to big questions raised by anthropologists, offers study tools to remind readers what concepts are important, and shows them why it all matters in the real world.

The book was in pretty solid condition when I received it
By Alexi
The book was in pretty solid condition when I received it, and the renting price is more than agreeable. The book itself is thorough and interesting. The real life examples littered throughout the book are plentiful, and fascinating. A good choice on my professors part, as this text book is something I actually enjoy reading most of the time.

Introduction to Environmental Geology (5th Edition), by Edward A. Keller

This text focuses on helping non-science majors develop an understanding of how geology and humanity interact. Ed Keller—the author who first defined the environmental geology curriculum—focuses on five fundamental concepts of environmental geology: Human Population Growth, Sustainability, Earth as a System, Hazardous Earth Processes, and Scientific Knowledge and Values. These concepts are introduced at the outset of the text, integrated throughout the text, and revisited at the end of each chapter. The Fifth Edition emphasizes currency, which is essential to this dynamic subject, and strengthens Keller’s hallmark “Fundamental Concepts of Environmental Geology,” unifying the text’s diverse topics while applying the concepts to real-world examples.

About the Author
Edward A. Keller is a professor, researcher, writer, and most importantly, mentor and teacher to undergraduate and graduate students. Currently, Dr. Keller's students are working on earthquake hazards, how waves of sediment move through a river system following disturbance, and geologic controld on habitat to endangered southern steelhead trout. He was born and raised in California (Bachelor’s degree in Geology and Mathematics from California State University at Fresno, Master’s degree in Geology from University of California at Davis), it was while pursuing his Ph.D. in Geology from Purdue University in 1973 that Ed wrote the first edition of Environmental Geology, the text that became the foundation of the environmental geology curriculum. Ed joined the faculty of the University of California Santa Barbara in 1976 and has been there since, serving multiple times as the chair of both the Environmental Studies and Hydrologic Science programs. In that time he has been the author on over 100 articles, including seminal works on fluvial processes and tectonic geomorphology. Ed’s academic honors include the Don J. Easterbrook Distinguished Scientist Award, Geological Society of America (2004), Quatercentenary Fellowship from Cambridge University, England (2000), two Outstanding Alumnus Awards from Purdue University (1994, 1996), A Distinguished Alumnus Award from California State University at Fresno (1998), the Outstanding Outreach Award from Southern California Earthquake Center (1999).

A coherent text that doesn't quite live up to expectations
By Clifford Blizard
Keller's text is a thorough exploration of both facets of environmental geology: natural hazards and the human impact on the environment. The text includes numerous case studies to illustrate the concepts, though most of them are set in the United States (especially the West Coast). Keller presents, in chapter one, four principles that are supposedly woven throughout the text. At the end of each chapter, he includes "Critical Thinking Questions", which I hoped would lead to vibrant in-class discussions. The other aspect of this book that led me to select it for undergraduate class was the CD-ROM, which promised to provide students with simulations of real-world environmental problem solving.
Alas, the book does not live up to its promises. My greatest disappointment is that the text is rather dry, and the Critical Thinking Questions rarely moved beyond synthesizing material from the chapter. I am also concerned that students explore environmental issues at both the local (for me, northeastern US) and global scales. Apart from a fairly thorough coverage of global warming and an occasional photo of an earthquake or volcano overseas, Keller seems content to focus on the US, especially his own home state, California. His only nod to Earth Systems Science is a few paragraphs crammed into the first chapter, along with mention of Gaia. The CD-ROM was less exciting for students than I had anticipated, and my class found the written part of the CD assignments difficult, and many answers were based upon previous ones, so if they got one wrong, they would get several wrong and do poorly as a result. Finally, I was disappointed by Keller'ss uninspired philosophical assertion in the final chapter, in which he insisted that "sustainable development" is possible and ought to be pursued. In a class discussion, the students all concluded that development and sustainability are mutually exclusive things.
The text is thorough and fairly accessable, but fails to move beyond being "like most other textbooks" despite the numerous ways it appears to do so at first glance.

For my Intro to Geology course, we were instructed to buy this book. I'm very glad that I did! It's very informative, easy to read, and there are plenty of examples / pictures to clarify what's being talked about. It really helps a lot when you're studying for a test!

Review of Environmental Geology, 4th edition
By A Customer
This reference is fine for the general reader who wishes to understand the basics of Environmental Geology, however, the information it contains can be found for a much less expensive cost at any online site or library. Much of the information covered is also a general topic of most high school geology courses, though it contains a good amount of information concerning human impact on natural processes. The writing style is concise, though not so dense as to defer all but the most determined reader.

W.G. Hoskins was one of the most original and influential British historians of the twentieth century. He realised that landscapes are the richest record we have of the past, and with his masterpiece, The Making of the English Landscape, he changed forever how we experience the places we live and work in.

A classic history, but flawed by bias in its final chapters
By J C E Hitchcock
William George Hoskins (1908-1992) was a pioneering figure in the field of English local history, and in 1965 was appointed as the first ever university professor in that discipline (at the University of Leicester). This book, first published in 1955, has become something of a classic of its kind.

I bought it in the 1970s Pelican edition when I came across it recently in a second-hand bookshop, largely for the purposes of comparison with Oliver Rackham's more recent work "The History of the Countryside". The two works cover slightly different ground. Hoskins (as his title indicates) limits himself to England, and does not touch on Wales, Scotland or Ireland; Rackham covers the whole of the British Isles, although in practice he deals with England in greater detail than the other three countries. Rackham (as his title indicates) confines himself to the countryside, whereas Hoskins also covers industrial and urban landscapes, and even in rural areas deals with villages and the built environment as well as woods and farmland. Their methodologies are also different. Rackham devotes a chapter to each different type of rural habitat- woodland, fields, heathland, moorland, marshes, etc, whereas Hoskins' book is written in chronological order from prehistoric times to the twentieth century.

A key moment for Professor Hoskins was what he calls the "English Settlement"- the coming of the Anglo-Saxon invaders in the fifth century AD, after the withdrawal of the Roman legions. Few features of the modern English landscape can, in his view, be attributed to the Roman or pre-Roman period. Each succeeding age, however, has left a mark which still survives. The Saxons' great contribution was the English village; most of the population in Romano-British times either lived in towns and cities or in isolated hamlets and farmsteads. A few new settlements were founded in the Middle Ages, chiefly in upland districts or those with poor soil, which were consequently the last to be settled, but outside the industrial areas most of the settlements in existence today were founded between the fifth and eleventh centuries and mentioned in the Domesday Book.

Like Dr Rackham, Professor Hoskins tends to concentrate on some parts of England more than others. In his case there is a particular emphasis on the East Midlands; Rutland may be the smallest county in England but more space is devoted to it in this book than to larger counties such as Cumberland, Hampshire or Norfolk. One reason for this emphasis may be that Hoskins (originally from Devon) lived and worked for a long time in Leicestershire, but another may be that it was this area, more than any other, which was affected by the Enclosure Acts of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Although he does not use those terms, Hoskins makes a distinction similar to the one Rackham was to make between "Ancient Countryside" and "Planned Countryside".

In the "peripheral areas" of England- the south-west peninsula, the Home Counties, eastern East Anglia, the Welsh Border counties and the upland North- the countryside had, broadly speaking, taken on its present appearance by the sixteenth century. These are the regions of small (often irregularly shaped) fields, winding lanes and small villages and hamlets, with isolated farms scattered among them. The rest of England, however, especially the East Midlands, was still dominated by the open-field tradition, and would remain so until the open fields were enclosed by Act of Parliament. This is the "chequer-board" countryside with larger, more regular fields, straighter roads and larger villages with few isolated farmsteads. Because these areas did not acquire their current appearance until around 1800, or in some cases even later, the processes which shaped them are better documented and therefore easier for the historian to study.

Hoskins also has some interesting points to make about the growth of towns and the built environment. He shows, for example, that traditional regional styles of building mostly developed during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, a period when growing prosperity made it possible for the middle classes to rebuild their homes in local stone or brick; previously most houses, except those of the very rich, had in all parts of England been made of wattle-and-daub on a timber frame. The Enclosure Acts also had unexpected effects on urban landscapes as well as rural ones; Hoskins demonstrates this by comparing the growth of two East Midland cities during the Industrial Revolution. Nottingham was surrounded by unenclosed open fields over which numerous people possessed complicated grazing rights and which for many years made it virtually impossible to expand the city outwards; the result was overcrowding and some of the worst slums in England. At Leicester the surrounding fields had been enclosed before the growth of industry and it was easier to obtain land for building; consequently the city was more spacious and living conditions were better, even for working-class inhabitants.

For most of its length the book is not only very informative, but also a delight to read. In order to tell his story, Hoskins relies upon not only official documents but also literature and poetry; John Clare (another East Midlander) seems a particular favourite. At times his own prose style verges on the poetic itself. There is, nevertheless, a serious flaw in the book, which is why I have only given it four stars.

Hoskins was clearly a small-c conservative (which is not necessarily the same thing as a large-C Conservative) who tended to look back on the pre-industrial era as a lost Golden Age. He could see little good about the nineteenth century and nothing good about the twentieth. For him the Industrial Revolution achieved nothing other than the despoiling of once-beautiful landscapes and townscapes with dark satanic mills; he ignores the fact that by 1900, and certainly by 1955, most people enjoyed far higher standards of living than their ancestors had done in 1700 or 1800. In his final chapter Hoskins simply rails at the changes in the landscape wrought by the twentieth century without analysing the social causes of those changes or even saying in much detail what those changes are. He even bewails the large number of Air Force bases in Suffolk and Lincolnshire, even though only ten years before he wrote his book the nation had been very grateful for those bases and for the men who flew from them.

A book about something as subjective as landscape cannot simply be a record of objective scientific or historical fact, so I have no objection to personal opinions in a book of this nature. Opinion, however, cannot simply be a substitute for analysis.

The best introduction to the evolution of the the English landscape. For professionals, students, travelers and all who seek to understand the processes - natural and human - behind the scenery, this is the best place to start.
