Very Helpful

This book was very helpful. Many details for a newbie but still a few things unclear for the non-technical person. There was quite a bit of information about WordPress which confused me a little about what to do if I don't use WordPress. I kind of had to read between the lines there. I am a true novice so this isn't meant to be a negative comment. There is just so much information that it's all difficult to connect. I still give this book 5 starts becauseit has helped me more than anything else I have read. The author did a great job of explaining most everything. Some things were probably thought to be "obvious" but to a newbie they aren't. I have not yet seen the videos which may answer my other questions. I kind of liken this subject to one just placing their hands on a keyboard at the computer for the first time - with a completely black screen - what do I do first and how do I do it? I hate to admit that I need so much clarity that I can't understand the basic information. For instance, the WordPress issue - Unless I just overlooked it there should be some sort of indication of how to use this information with other web hosts, even if it's just that you can. Understand, I am a true NEWBIE and I realize it's possible what I'm saying doesn't even make sense. But, the main thing is that I still had questions when I finished the book. I am sure that is very normal. Having said all that - I like the author's writing style and the way it flowed. It made more sense to me than anything else I have read. I'm asking the author to write another book with more details for those of us who don't understand it all.Or, is that even possible?

Depressing laws in early 19th century Missouri

This book involves settler-farmers and is set in Missouri in the early 19th century. Marcus Guthrie is something of a tyrant who beats his wife, and when his son, Thornton, misbehaved out in the fields when very young, he shot at him and nicked an ear. (This is unrealistic. A master sniper would have real trouble doing this deliberately with a modern rifle, and weapons of that time were a completely different matter.) Early in the book, Marcus decides to take on three slaves to keep the farm going, while he sits back and partakes of too much alcohol. Thornton effectively has to work in the same way as the slaves, so Thornton is effectively a slave, except he sleeps in the main house. The book is essentially an account of life of slaves in those times, except that Thornton, effectively being one of them, sneaks in books to one who can read. Later, it becomes too much, and they plan a slave escape.

The book has excellent descriptions, the atmosphere seems real, the characters are well drawn and overall it gives a picture of what life might have been like. (I have no idea as to how accurate it is.) There are some rather strong examples of brutality towards slaves, and the failings of the law at the time towards slaves, women, and just about anyone except the property owner. The book is very introspective, and a lot of time is spent on what the characters, and particularly Thornton, are feeling. Having said that, there are surprisingly few clues as to why certain decisions were taken while other possibilities were rejected. There are a number of references to Rip van Winkle, and the end of the book contains a major scene that occurs twenty years after the bulk. While it is a major scene, there was no lead-up explaining how the characters got into this situation, and for me, that was a little like having Hamlet's youth, his return to see the ghost, then everything deleted until the final scene. To summarize, the book is interesting, a lot of research went into it, but it really missed the chance to make a real impact. As for value for money, I think it is underpriced.

A Crime is Not Erased, thus Fear the Hangman

It is 1834 in Colombia, Missouri and the protagonist, Thornton, is a 15 year old boy. He has built up a sentiment of hatred towards Marcus Guthrie who has handled him, his son, his slaves and his wife without mercy and robbed them from their dreams while brutally humiliating them. Thornton risks his life in their strife to be emancipated from Guthrie ' s shackles. Thornton wants to blossom like the crops he tended.

Guthrie bought slaves for labour on Guthrie s Farms and said: " they weren't like white men,....God did not intend for them to walk about like white men." Thus with that he implicated loss of freedom, deprivation and cruelty for the slaves.

The story takes us through a struggle to loosen the unfortunate from the intolerable discrimination of a drunkard while they lived under circumstances where one is hunted and ran the risk to be punished with "whippings to the removal of digits with a sharp blade to mutilation and hanging."

Under restricted circumstances one finds violence, betrayal, envy, jealousy, infidelity and love across the colour bar. The trapped conspired and tried to escape a 100 miles west where one answers to no man, but yourself forever.

Laws enforced segregation with guns.Today, 180 years further, there are new laws, and one realizes that how good life can be if you have freedom. We witness how being a slave sometimes felt then, that your spirit bent and shifted positions in order to better carry the burdens of bondage. We see how old men's spirits were permanently buckled.

As the author has training in law, she shares her knowledge of crime and punishment, she shows us how unfair the laws were concerning slaves and women. She discusses the crime of murder through her concept of the Hangman. Law then, would not listen to woman or slave.

Thornton kills and manages to escape his punishment for 20 years. Here the author parallels her story with the story of Rip van Winkle, a book published in 1819. Rip is the character created by Washington Irvine, who awakes to discover he has had the luxury to sleep for 20 years through the hardships of the American Revolution (1765 -1783).

With reference to Thornton this quotation: "His own freedom no longer mattered. His emancipation from Guthrie did everything but set him free. In the eyes of the law, he had committed a murder because: "Killing a white man to defend a slave would be impossible to plead a justifiable defence".

Thornton wished he could slumber for 20 years and awake when his problem was solved. The question is posed: Does a hangman sleep somewhere and when poked/stirred with bad deeds, dare to awaken? Yes, you should be aware of your own life and fear the sleeping hangman, the arm of the law.

Good deeds would not erase the crime and you will always pay for it. The Hangman is indiscriminate." He takes a life even who did not deserve the noose but could not be proved. Killing is never the answer.

This is a historical novel focusing on law, freedom and punishment, with specific reference to the fight for freedom of slaves(1834 -1855). The author has a note of caution to all lawbreakers: "Make no mistake for the rest of your life, you will be a wanted man."

A book for a human rights campaigner, law practitioners and readers who value a touch of literary fiction, touching reality.

Los Angeles author Deborah Leigh but she has lived and experienced life living in both Europe and the US and she has returned home to lie in downtown Los Angeles. She has experience as a magazine editor, a legal eagle, and an adventurer and all of those ingredients are evident in this her debut novel.

Historical fiction seems a natural genre for Deborah and the manner in which she weaves to dissect the concept of slavery and its effects on both slaves and slave owners, including not only the aspects we have learned form other books and films and history studies, but also that rare aspect of the connections between the paradoxical groups. Love plays a factor here, as does the sacred unity of family.

In a unique but very wise structural decision, Deborah divides her story into three parts - Fallow Ground, Crop Rotation, and Harvest - each with double meanings as only a fine writer can serve.

Deborah's prose is poetic: `Thornton Guthrie kept one eye on the Hawken rifle his father pointed at him and one eye on the black-capped chickadees that nested in the eaves of the barn. Both scared him. If he let the birds swoop in and fly away with the spring wheat seeds he had just broadcast, his father might suspect a crop-theft conspiracy between Thornton and the birds and shoot Thornton, the bigger, slower, easier target. Marcus Guthrie had done it before, had shot his son. Thornton was seven and had milked the family cow just a half tick too slow. The animal had been ornery.' etc With an opening this intriguing and strong the reader is assured this is an author who is creating an important reputation on the basis of a debut novel. However, readers will enjoy the folksy narrative of the small-town millionaire who revolutionized retail distribution. Walton also addresses accusations against him, such as running the competition out of town. Coauthor Huey does a fine job of incorporating candid testimonials from family members and associates, who thought Walton's ideas were sometimes silly. Shortly after Walton's death, the book was given an overly sentimental postscript (a minor detraction) and rushed into print. Highly recommended for public and academic business collections.

What can I say: This is a brilliantly written book about an incredible individual telling his spectacular success story. If you're reading this review, do yourself a favor: stop wasting time and start reading this book instead.

If you're still foolishly reading my review, here's why I love this book so much:
- Sam tells his story from beginning to end, and explains his thinking and principles behind his decisions. He is extremely humble and down to earth.
- Sam will tell a story from his point of few and then on the next page, there will be long quote from someone involved giving their angle on the same story.
- I did my MBA a few years ago; this book should have been required reading. Anyone who understands Sam's principles and applies them will be extremely successful.

Lastly, the people who haven't even read this book and are giving it one star reviews...I hope someday they accomplish enough in life to be worthy to lick Sam's shoes. I wonder if anyone has ever worked harder, improved the lives of more people, and took less for himself than Sam Walton.

The USA is in desperate need of an education on free trade and economics. People believe that trade, robots, etc "destroy jobs." While you are hating robots and trade, why not add shovels to your list? One shovel destroys the jobs of 100 men digging with spoons. Don't stop at shovels. Every tool that improves efficiency and makes our lives better "destroys" jobs.

The secret to high paying jobs and being able to pay employees the highest wage possible is to give them the best tools possible so they can maximize their production. Every job that is eliminated by increased efficiency frees up a worker to do something else. After you're done reading this book, read Henry Ford's "My Life and Work." He paid extremely high wages and constantly hired more people while constantly cutting costs and improving efficiency.

As unassuming -and wise- as its author, Sam Walton

"Made in America" is as unassuming as its author, Sam Walton. It is written in very colloquial plain "American" English, so you can almost image Mr. Walton, in his death bed, dictating this little book of wisdom. It is filled with many pearls of wisdom, on how to be a small business owner, on never giving up and always trying new things. I am surprised more people don't read this little known book, given that Sam Walton has to go down in history (maybe Bill Gates?) as the most successful entrepreneur in American history. The book is not filled with technical lexicon found in MBA programs. It is a non nonsense book, told from Walton's perspective. I recommend this book.

All I can say is when reading this Sam seems like such a good ol boy. A story starting with his humble beginnings, oh, and how he'd work his store managers constantly, yea lotta them got rich in the process. Decent, honest, family man, who started out with a few Ben a Franklin stores. He, saw what was happening in the sixties, big stores like K Mart, Moreway, Arlans, etc. He wanted to compete, well you know who won ! Despite those who dislike Walmart and refuse to step inside, you really need to admit that they have driven prices down. But, the cost had been the small business owner, and small town / and city business districts have been mostly laid to ruin. It was bound to happen, just like it has in most other catagories, retail and wholesale. Just a few major players.

Couldn't put it down!!

I just read straight through the night! Jamie Magee has done it again! An entrancing novel filed with last, excitement, suspense...What more could a girl ask for. With her trade mark style she manages to turn the bad guy into the romantic lead and humanize/explain his actions. I highly recommend if you have read any of her books...our if not this is a magical one to start with! I can't wait for the next chapter in this web of hearts!!!

I am a huge fan of Jamie Magee! With great reason, she is just simply amazing. Her stories are very intricate and well thought out, that if you read her books over and over, you would discover something new everytime.
I wasn't thrilled with Drake during most of this series, but this book has completely turned my opinion around, as it should. He finally gets to tell his story and I saw a complete different side of Drake and what made him how he was It's a great love story and I look forward to reading more from Ms. Magee.

Jamie has such a wonderful mind! When I pick up a book of hers I just can't put it down I get sucked into her world more and more with every word and before I know it I have read the whole book...
In this book we get to see inside of Drake his thoughts and fears everything that drives him to be the man he is and he is not stopping until Madison Marie is his!

We get to see into Madison's head also and let me tell you there is a lot going on in there ALL of the time! She is fighting her feelings for her one true love a battle she has inside her head more than once.. Once she stops fighting everything just seemed to fall into place

I feel you could read this as a stand alone book without being confused but I strongly suggest you read them all so you can fall in love with everyone in the Web of Heart and Souls series

literally the only sweater book you'll ever need

If you want just patterns that tell you exactly what to do stitch by stitch, this isn't the book for you. If you want to everything necessary to learning how to design your own garments, along with a generous helping of commentary and lots of fodder for your imagination to spin off and invent your own "knitting workshop," then GET THIS BOOK. The seven separate sleeve shapings and how they can be done on a circular needle alone are worth five times what you're going to pay. The garter stitch chapter doubles that to ten.
Seriously -- get Barbara Walker's stitch collections, a fair isle chart book or two, and this. You literally do not need anything else to be knitting sweaters that you yourself designed for the rest of your life. Then, when people ask you what pattern you used, you can smile subtly and say, "Oh none, I just made it up." You and Elizabeth Zimmerman. :-)

Another winner, one of my favorite knitting books.

There are 4 original great books by EZ (Knitting without Tears, Knitting Almanac, Knitting Workshop and Knitting Around.) Lately, two more, The Opinionated Knitter and Knit One, Knit all have been added to the group. They feature a method of knitting without strictly written line-by-line patterns, and some novel construction methods. This book, Knitting Workshop has the famous "surprise" sweater which looks like a rumpled bathmat and magically transforms, with a few deft flips and a bit of legerdemain, into the cutest baby sweater you ever saw. It can be modified to make an adult jacket, too.

The book has been updated. There are new color photographs of the knitted patterns, new drawings, some new techniques, and extended sizes. The book also has plenty more useful and adaptable patterns--sweaters, hats, you name it. And since the patterns are adaptable to many kinds of wool, this is one knitting book that won't seem dated five or ten years from now. Some of the patterns are a bit quirky, like the heart-shaped hat. Some of the patterns are absolute go-to classics; another kid's pattern, the Tomtem coat is a hooded jacket that works so well for cool, damp days. There are quite a few shawls, but the Pi Shawl is a long-standing favorite--a round lace shawl that has a simple design of eyelets that make decorative look. The shawl can be done in rings of color or plain. Its simplicity of design lends itself to lace patterns, and many people have used it as the springboard for some very elaborate, lacy round shawls.

There are also patterns for seamless patterns for sweaters with raglan or saddle shoulder. These can be made up in various sizes based on chest measurement for a custom fit.

The book was written to go with a video series. Some of the videos are still available from the publisher. The book, however, stands alone as a great knitting classic, and one that I reach for all the time.

I use it all the time

I am a huge Elizabeth Zimmerman fan, and I love this book. The baby garter stitch surprise jacket is an icon of knitting. Everyone who saw the first one I made went completely gaga over it. I was embarrassed at a baby shower when I gave one and everyone went nuts over it. One caveat: EZ gives the pattern in a 7st/in guage, which makes a VERY tiny sweater. I would recommend going up some needle sizes.
I like the directions for the seamless shoulder shapings in this book better than the directions given in "Knitting Without Tears" because there are more of them, the pictures are front and back, and I feel the directions are more clear. Of any of EZ's books, this is the one with the most projects I want to make. I love it, and I frequently refer to it for techniques I want to use in my own projects.
